Having an entrepreneurial spirit at a young age, Kara started her photography business at the age of 16 and opened her first studio two years later. The year 2016 marks the eighth year of business for Kara, and she is loving every second of it.
When she’s not out chasing the light, she loves snuggling with her husky pups Mishka and Loki and spending time with husband Kris (who is one-half of Kris & Kara Wedding Photography) and their son Nicholas.
What inspired you to become a photographer?
Growing up with an artist mother, I was always encouraged to be creative and to try different forms of artistic expression. As soon as I picked up my very first film camera, man. It was over. I was hooked!
What's your favorite photo that you've taken?
I'm completely biased, but the photos I take of my son are always my new favorites.
What's your dream project?
Any project where I shoot and create simply for my own creative outlet.
Whether you're self-taught or have formal education in photography, what's been the best source of information for you as you grow as an artist?
Attending conferences such as AfterDark, Shutterfest, etc has been absolutely invaluable - and also private workshops. I have learned from renowned newborn photographers like Rachel Vanoven and Pebbles & Polka Dots and they were absolutely instrumental in molding my craft as a newborn photographer.
What's your favorite photography accessory (other than your camera)?
Definitely my reflector! It can take a very blah portrait to something worth admiring.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose?
I would love to live in Ireland full time. My husband and I visited on our honeymoon and absolutely fell in love.
